Marketa Vondrousova Wins Women’s Single Wimbledon

Marketa Vondrousova characterizes herself as being ‘quiet.’ However, the 24-year-old was so close to winning the Wimbledon championship, making history by becoming the first unseeded woman to win on Church Road, that she could hardly breathe. She had three championship points at 6-4, 5-4, and 40-0.

While it is true that a lot is being talked about Wimbledon Champion Carlos Alcaraz, not a lot of people are aware of who the Wimbledon Champion in the women’s single is. She is none other than Czech player Marketa Vondrousova.

According to sources, “Marketa Vondrousova plans to celebrate with beer and a new tattoo after becoming one of the most unlikely Wimbledon champions by beating Ons Jabeur in the final this weekend.”

Over the past few years, it has been usual to see first-time major champions in women’s singles. Sofia Kenin, Barbora Krejcikova, Emma Raducanu, Elena Rybakina, and Aryna Sabalenka have all won their maiden Grand Slam championships in the past three years alone.

That list now includes a new name, Vondrousova, who is taking center stage. She joined a distinguished group of Czech women’s singles champions at Wimbledon, including Petra Kvitova, Jana Novotna, and Martina Navratilova.

She told a few international media members, “I couldn’t breathe.” She also stated:

“Everybody was surprised how calm I was (in the final). My coach told me, he couldn’t believe how calm I was. That was the key to this title, that I just kept believing and kept calm even when Ons took the lead (early in both sets). I was just talking to myself, ‘Just stay focused and keep it together’.”

On Monday, Vondrousova, who began her SW19 charge at No. 42 in the standings, will make her maiden appearance in the top 10. The left-handed Czech, like her opponent on Saturday Ons Jabeur, who was in her third major final, is no stranger to a big platform. As a youngster, she advanced to the final at Roland Garros, and she also advanced to the gold medal round of the Tokyo Olympics.

Last year, Vondrousova underwent two surgeries on her left wrist. A stress fracture caused the first, while a repair treatment caused the second. She spent three months in a cast.
