Island Beats

Bob Marley was once quoted as saying, “I love the development of our music, that’s what I really dig about the whole thing. How we’ve tried to develop, y’know? It grows. That’s why every day people come forward with new songs. Music goes on forever.”
There’s no denying the power of music. It has been said that “music speaks what cannot be expressed, soothes the mind and gives it rest, heals the heart and makes it whole.” This is even more so when it is “your” local or indigenous music.
Music is said to have played a critical role in shaping Caribbean nationalism leading up to and following independence. It has played a major role in shaping who we are and continues to play an integral role in daily living.
Every Thursday RSL 97 celebrates that unique musical power by dedicating an entire day’s programming to promoting and sharing local music and culture, and reflecting the full depth and breadth of uniquely Saint Lucian music; by introducing a new generation to some of their parent’s favorite artistes, while providing a platform for new emerging artistes to showcase their talent, including via live in-studio jam sessions.
The weekly programme showcases the vast artistic talent thriving in communities around the island and across a multiplicity of sectors, from musicians to performance poets and is dedicated to promoting the burgeoning creative industries.
It features musicians, entrepreneurs, sculptors among other artistes from all over the island while serving as an artistic passport for Saint Lucians both here and in the diaspora.
