Chopped ex-girlfriend not satisfied with jail sentence
Victim of a chopping incident which took place July last year, says she is not satisfied with the sentence imposed by the court.
Martha Joseph of Canaries who pleaded guilty to offense was sentenced to 8 years in prison, yesterday.
According to the facts relayed by the prosecution at about 10:30am on Friday June 12, 2009, Juliette Mauricette, Joseph’s ex-girlfriend and the mother of his three children, was on her way to work at the Lime in Rodney Bay.
While walking past KFC at the Rodney Bay Mall, Joseph chopped Mauricette with a cutlass on various parts of her body which included her neck, head, face, shoulder, arms and both hands.
Following Joseph’s attack, Mauricette was taken to Victoria Hospital by ambulance where she was treated and admitted to the Intensive Care Unit for one month.
Juliette Mauricette who is blind and partially handicapped says she will not be able to see her children grow up, yet her attacked has just been given a slap on the risk.
“Yesterday I went to court for sentencing, I was expecting Matta would have gotten 15 to 20 years in prison…so that my children would have been grown up, I would have been more settled with my life…I mean just 8 years…in 8 years I will not even get to full terms with the way I am right now,” Mauricette said.
She also fears that her perpetrator may not even spend the full jail term.
“Within the next 8 years---and maybe not even 8, in 6 years he could be back on the streets and I am not happy about that at all,” she lamented.
I have a serious problem, that man has blinded me for the rest of my life, I haven’t seen one doctor that can assure me that I will get my sight back, I will not even see my children growing up. That man has caused me a lot of scares, internally and externally and for that man to be getting 8 years, that is nothing.”
Mauricette also lambasted St. Lucia’s justice system.
“The justice system in St. Lucia is too soft. It’s like they sending a message to criminals that its ok to do crime because they going to Bordelaise eat whatever they want and before two days they back on the streets and doing more crime again.”
Mauricette said everyday of her life is a struggle and she depends on her children to assist her.
